Darren Criss Surprise Serenades Oscar-Winning Composer Alan Menken
Oscar-winning composer Alan Menken, who written the music activity for "The Little Mermaid," "Beauty as well as the Animal," "Aladdin" plus much more, once handed a hundred dollar tip with a college kid doing an acoustic medley of his tunes inside a coffee shop.Nowadays that "kid" is way better known to as Darren Criss from "Glee," at the Billboard / Hollywood Reporter Film & TV Music Conference on Monday, he gained an unpredicted appearance before participants -- along with his guitar in hands -- and serenaded Menken once again.InchJust take a look at tunes / could they be not neat? Wouldn't you think your collection's complete?" Criss sang, reworking the lyrics to Menken's "Part of Your World" from "The Little Mermaid." "Wouldn't you think you're the guy, the guy which has everything?"The medley found the final outcome by getting a look and feel within the voice of Jasmine herself, Jum Salonga."Used to do formerly play for pennies inside a cafe within the College of Michigan," Criss referred to from stage. "I used to be just wrecking 'Part from the World' when Alan will come in. I used to be just shocked!" "He was playing a number of these tunes really, really fantastically," Menken countered, still recouping from his genuine surprise. "I used to be really impressed along with his talent. Next factor I realize, Darren's on "Glee"! He's just doing incredible work."Criss later states he spent the $100 "on alcohol." "Billboard" Editorial Director Bill Werde presented Menken using this year's Billboard / Hollywood Reporter Maestro Award after showing him as "the Babe Ruth of composers." Indeed, to call Menken's own resume "incredible" is a mammoth understatement."The most popular part about [his] career is always that in the course of the eighties, Bmi gave [him] a very long time achievement award for his concentrate on Broadway -- after which it he ongoing to win eight Academy awards," Werde marveled within the stage. In the extended chat that was heavy on wisecracks, the pair spoken about Menken's early fascination with songwriting (which eventually incorporated inspiration within the Beatles, the Moving Gems and Bob Dylan), his transition from Broadway to Disney, his non-Disney work (his song in this summer's "Captain America: The Initial Avenger," mentioned Menken, was "deliberately an homage to Irving Berlin") and also the multiple Oscar wins.Menken spoke fondly about his parents, all of whom are dental professionals, in addition to their reply to "Little Shop of Problems" particularly. One of the film's villains, clearly, can be a murderous dental office who loves imposing discomfort. "After I always did in people days, I truly gave my parents a cassette tape in the score." His recounting in the reacting to-machine message left because when mother elicited some large laughs. "'Hi honey, it's mother. We heard the tape. OK.'" They eventually got behind it too as lent some pictures of abscesses for the production.Through the wide-different conversation, Menken advised composers inside the audience against getting too installed on their tunes when concentrating on musicals. "It is not in regards to the song. It comes down lower towards the song in context in the musical. Does it fit the level of smoothness? Does it provide the relaxation in the story? Does it do this with an audience?" He mentioned he's even exchanged better tunes for lesser tunes if the offered the story. He's a inclination to create around the piano or keyboard, and mentioned that whenever writing alone, he's substantially faster. "I've literally had occasions where I've written the dwelling from the song inside the time it needed my fingers to see it."In comparison, "the song 'Beauty as well as the Beast' was several hours at work, that's unusual for just about any simple ballad. We'd a tape running the entire duration of [cowriter] Howard [Ashman] and me concentrating on it. In some manner I saved that tape which i've it."Menken received multiple standing ovations within the audience, but possibly Criss put it best: "The amount of Oscars is one to bastard hold?" Criss sang to have an eruption of laughter around the room. "She's verses and bridges aplenty / Want a geniune song for that movie? He'll write 20." Billboard

Trailer: Love, War and Angelina Jolie Collide in Blood and Honey
So you might remember that Angelina Jolie wrote and directed a feature — a real good-time-party-blast called In the Land of Blood and Honey, about the illicit romance between a Muslim woman and a Serbian troop at the peak of the war in Bosnia. Now there’s a trailer. Honestly, I don’t even have an opinion on this because we all know that FilmDistrict just cuts trailers together to sell totally different movies than they ones they actually release, so for all any of us can tell, this putative holiday tear-jerker about love and war and van explosions is really just another one of their thoughtful, sophisticated, moody, arty dramas for adults. Boooooo!!! I can see the lawsuit now: “I was promised blood and honey. I received blood and a couple gallons of tobacco-flavored Eastern European teardrops.” And they’d be right. VERDICT: Sold, obviously.

Rankings Corporate Jungle: SNL Takes Small Slide With Ben Stiller In Host Slot
Alec Baldwin and Melissa McCarthy rate slightly over Ben Stiller, a minimum of so far as NBC’s Saturday Evening Live is worried. Despite special looks by Hugh Jackman and Kenny G along with a hosting stint from Stiller — starring within the new Brett Ratner feature Tower Heist – the thirdinstallment of SNL’s year could average only a 4.8 rating/12 be part of metered-market houses. That even compares to a 5.1 for that season premiere two days ago with host Baldwin along with a 5.2 on March. 1 with McCarthy presiding. Last evening’s amounts may happen to be influenced by a number of rain delays throughout Game one of the American League Championship Series on Fox, pushing the overall game’s conclusion far after normal. Texas ended up beating Detroit, 3-2. In grown ups 18-49, however, last evening’s SNL matched up the two.6/11 produced through the Baldwin-located season kickoff.

Phones fuel and frustrate film auds
Cell phones can both be a nuisance and a helpful way to get more moviegoers into theaters, ticket sellers and exhibitors said at Variety and Stradella's Film Marketing Summit on Tuesday. For Fandango, ticket sales on mobile devices have grown from 1% to 20% of the online ticket seller's business in a couple of years, according to Ted Hong, the company's chief marketing officer. Fandango is now testing barcodes that can be scanned in theaters when tix are purchased on cell phones. Two exhibitors are currently testing the service, with a third coming on board soon. But as consumers rely more on their cell phones to text and tweet, their increased usage in theaters is turning off moviegoers to the point where exhibs need to remove them during screenings. "When someone's not happy (about the no cell phone policy), I say tell your friends," said Landmark Theaters CEO Ted Mundorff, adding that "the worst offenders are the acquisition people at film festivals. It's already against all odds that these films get picked up." Panelists also stressed the merits of social media as a tool to boost ticket sales, whether sites like Twitter, Facebook or Eventful are being used on a mobile device or not. "Letting people be part of the process pays off in spades," said Jordan Glazier, CEO of Eventful. "That's what social media is for," adding that an online campaign that interacts with potential moviegoers creates "a sense of affiliation, belonging and kinship" which "translates to theatergoing." Fandango's Hong agreed, saying, "The power of online is it's much more of a dialogue. TV is still one way." All agreed that the growth of online advertising means studios need to figure out how to speak with audiences in a new way. "We want to protect the theatrical window," Hong said, "but we want studios to stop marketing and start connecting with audiences to the point where it doesn't feel like marketing." And Landmark's Mundorff requested that studios spend more to support a film after it opens in theaters. "A lot of the time they're not supported," he said. Mundorff isn't a fan of discounting ticket prices to fill seats. He didn't approve of Lionsgate's pair-up with Groupon and Fandango to discount tickets for "The Lincoln Lawyer" earlier this year. "When the consumer is buying a $6 ticket you are devaluing movies," he said. But the ploy worked for Fandango and Lionsgate, which said 89% of the people who took advantage of the discount said "they would not have seen the movie had it not been for Groupon," Hong said. Mundorff doesn't foresee a time when film ads no longer appear in newspapers. "People read reviews and reviews drive our business," Mundorff said. "If the industry abandons newspapers, newspapers will abandon reviews." The Alamo Drafhouse chain of theaters is relying on positive word of mouth and serving alcohol in a more laidback setting to attract auds. "Our theaters are churches, and my goal is to preach to cinema fans of different denominations," said Henri Mazza, chief creative officer of the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema. The Texas-based chain has 10 locations, mostly around the state, and one in Winchester, Virginia, but is looking to expand into Los Angeles and NY soon. "The first couple of years was about perfecting the experience," Mazza said. Contact Marc Graser at marc.graser@variety.comWatch Movies Online For Free

RATINGS RAT RACE: Kitchen Nightmares Steady As All Friday Scripted Series Drop
Last November, when ABC beat CBS’ scripted Friday lineup multiple times in adults 18-49 with a mix of reality shows and newsmagazines, I wondered whether the concept of putting scripted series on Friday was doomed. Well, looking at the numbers last night, it certainly seems that way, particularly if you program for the advertiser-friendly adults 18-49 set. Fox’s reality series Kitchen Nightmares (1.6/6 in adults 18-49, 4 million viewers) and ABC’s newsmagazine 20/20 (1.2/4, 4 million) were the only programs on the Big 4 networks last night not to drop from premiere week in adults 18-49, with all scripted shows down. While this may not be particularly disconcerting for CBS — which is putting an older-skewing fare on the night that can pack 10 million viewers despite low 18-49 numbers — it has got to be alarming for NBC, which is about to unspool two younger-skewing shows on the night, Chuck and Grimm. Following Kitchen Nightmares, Fringe (1.2/4, 3.1 million viewers) was down 20% from its low season premiere last week. Granted the series grows some 50% in DVR viewing, this is still a very low base to start from, making it unlikely that the sci-fi drama can cheat cancellation one more time. Like Fringe, CBS’ rookie A Gifted Man (1.2/4, 8.1 million) is fading, down 14% from its debut last week and tied with Fringe and 20/20 as the lowest-rated first-run program last night. CSI: NY (1.6/5, 10 million) was down 11% from last week in 18-49, while Blue Bloods (1.8/6, 11.2 million) was down 10% but still ranked as the highest-rated program on Friday in both 18-49 and total viewers. NBC and ABC ran repeats of freshman series for additional sampling, followed by newsmagazines. NBC’s two-hour Dateline (1.6/5, 6.2 million) was down 20% in the demo from last week, 20/20 was up by that much. CBS (1.5/5, 9.8 million) won the night in 18-49 and total viewers, but it will be interesting to see how the network fares against NBC and especially ABC when the networks ditch scripted reruns for Chuck and Grimm (NBC) and reality, coupled with 20/20 (ABC). The CW can’t re-create the ratings magic Smallville and Supernatural had together last season, drawing tons of young eyeballs to the low-trafficked Friday night. Nikita (0.6/2, 1.8 million) at least held steady from its low start last week in 18-49 and shed 5% in total viewers. Supernatural (0.7/2, 1.8 million) was down a tenth in the demo and 10% in viewers.Watch X-Men: First Class Megavideo
